depression

depressionThroughout history the first record entered in a diagnostic manual of depression came fifty years ago. During this time, psychoanalysis became the cure.

Depression however, has been around for thousands of years. During 5th and 4th BC Hippocrates debated the topic of mental illnesses. He believed that it descended biologically. Other people believed that mental illnesses was caused by either paranormal powers or magical sources. His basic cure consisted of a superior diet, drink and lack of sexual activities. Plato on the other hand had a slightly different outlook. His belief was that the mind itself caused a person to go mad.

No matter what history tells us or the future ensures us about depression one thing has always stayed the same, the symptoms. Depression is not hard to diagnose and cannot be diagnosed through the ability of a machine or blood tests.

Here are some symptoms of depression to watch out for:

  • Sadness that lasts more than two weeks without any reprieve
  • Restlessness or insomnia
  • Irritability or high tension, overwhelming stress
  • Feeling of worthlessness, hopelessness, guilt or lost in a “black fog” feeling
  • Drop of interest in activities or hobbies that were once a great highlight of life
  • Incoherent or discombobulated, lack of concentration
  • Lack of energy, fatigued all the time
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

When depression has gone on for more than two weeks, it is time to look for medical help. A therapist is a great place to start, sometimes however when you are new to a town or hardly know anyone you may want to discuss your depression with your doctor. If suicidal thoughts are at play then it is time to get help as soon as possible. Call your doctor as soon as you can, until then talk with friends and family for support.
