insomnia

insomniaEverybody needs at least six hours of sleep to have great health, a strong mind and an upbeat personality. We do not all get those six hours however, sometimes this happens to certain people throughout the night per nightmares or moments of coldness or hot flashes in the night. Sometimes however, there is a bigger reason.

Insomnia affects nearly 60 million people in the United States, 40 percent being men and 30 percent being women. The percentage lies down at night to fall asleep just as everyone else does but instead of falling asleep within 20 minutes or less, they can take hours to finally fall asleep. Typically, people with insomnia start to finally fall asleep around 3:00 a.m., if you add that the average person wakes up around 6:00 a.m. to get ready for work that is not much time at all for sleeping.

There are different causes for insomnia and different cures as well; here are some of the most common:

  • Advancing in Age, typically the age group who find themselves developing insomnia are about 60 years old.
  • Depression – Being depressed can be associated to a lot of health problems. Typically people too sad to enjoy their life; find themselves thinking too much to let their mind rest.
    • Therapy might help to depression under control; talk with your doctor about both the depression and the insomnia.
    • Female – Being a female has a lot to do with insomnia. As a female, we are constantly worrying about our family, the house, and the bills and so on. We manage everything and we are the glue that holds the family together which is a lot of pressure sometimes that alone can cause insomnia.
    • Stress – We all have stress at one time or another in life and those with stress realize that it affects most everything.
      • Find a way to alleviate that stress, some people paint, draw, play golf, hang out with friends, go to the mall, watch a movie, or have a nice glass of wine and read a book. Just do something that causes no stress to be obtained.
      • Medication Side Effects – Typically starting a new medication can give a person insomnia at first. However, if it goes on for too long, it would be worth mentioning to your doctor.
